Week 2:
Overcoming Addiction

Understanding Addictions

Addiction is a compulsive, chronic, physiological, or psychological need for a habit-forming substance, behavior, or activity. Spiritually, addiction represents a form of bondage that prevents us from fully living out God's purpose for our lives.

While there are many types of addictions, one of the most prevalent among men is pornography. It not only affects our minds and bodies but also our spiritual health and relationships

Scripture calls us to live pure and holy lives. In 1 Corinthians 6:18, we are urged to flee from sexual immorality. Romans 12:2 reminds us not to conform to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds.

The Battle for Purity

Read 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 and Matthew 5:8

Scriptural Guidance:

  • Confession and Repentance: Acknowledge the addiction and ask God for forgiveness and strength.
  • Avoid Triggers: Identify and avoid situations, places, and people that trigger addictive behavior.
  • Replace with Positive Habits: Engage in activities that build you up spiritually and physically.
  • Regular Bible Study and Prayer: Immerse yourself in God's Word and maintain a strong prayer life.

Accountability and Support

Having someone to walk with you, pray for you, and hold you accountable can make a significant difference in overcoming addiction. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 tells us that two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.

Look for someone you trust and respect, who shares your faith and values. It could be a friend, mentor, or someone from your church community.

Being part of a supportive community provides encouragement, strength, and a sense of belonging. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges us to spur one another on toward love and good deeds and not give up meeting together.

Personal Reflection and Goal Setting

Reflect on your current struggles with addiction. What are your triggers? How does it affect your life and spiritual walk?

Write down specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals for overcoming your addiction. For example, 'I will spend at least 30 minutes in prayer and Bible study each day to strengthen my resolve.

Develop a plan that includes avoiding triggers, replacing negative habits with positive ones, and incorporating regular prayer and Bible study. Share this plan with your accountability partner.
